Contemporary Arts Centre complex Hin Bus Depot will be given over to a one day celebration of vinyl records and all things vintage on Saturday April 21st, in conjunction “World Record Store Day” which recognises independent record stores all over the world with parties, in-store performances and special releases.

KL-based vinyl record collective Diskosantan will bring together various vendors from record stores, personal collectors, and band merchandisers so that Penang enthusiasts can browse for for portable turntables, styluses, cartridges, headphones and and old vinyl records. in addition, an all day, old-style flea market and swap meet is planned to celebrate “vintage and thrift” culture, with stalls selling vintage clothing and fashion, antique/mid-century furniture, cameras, retro music, old mobiles/bikes, but also new vintage-inspired and artisanal goods, and independent clothing and streetwear labels.

Vintage collectors will show some of their collections, including vintage music memorabilia from KL-collective Patina All Stars, one of the co-organisers of the event.  You can also see an exhibition of film photography Lost is Paradise, by three local photographers, Shafiq Sani, Ikhwan Aiman and Azryy Ahmad, and a slide show of old movie stills.  There will be a barbeque organised that day for hungry visitors to enjoy as an alternative to Hin Bus Depot’s own cafes and food outlets. Ze Arcade Paint (ZAP) & Jam Sesh are organising the barbeque and a skate jam, as well as hosting the event and venue.

And of course there will be music to be heard from the moment the doors open at 12pm until late at night. Diskosantan will provide much of the music, with vinyl sessions curated according to their eclectic tastes which include cumbia afro beat, rock & roll, punk, garage rock indie, brit rock/pop, A go go, psychedelic rock, downtempo, jazz, disco, house, funk and more. Also playing a session and releasing their EP is minimal, noir electropunk outfit from Penang Delta 9. Several live band performances are scheduled, with sessions by KL-bands Milo Dinosaur, Speedwitches, Coma, and several others.
