Penang Free Sheet is a weekly newsletter with information on the top things to do in Penang. We list art exhibitions, music events, talks, book launches, workshops, tours and other cultural and community activities. Originally a printed newsletter, Penang Free Sheet went entirely digital during the pandemic.
History: Penang Free Sheet was founded by volunteers in December 2014. A group of friends were frustrated that so many creative people were arranging events, shows, concerts, workshops and exhibitions, but that there was no easy way for them to get the word out to people. Meanwhile, other people were sitting around complaining that there was nothing to do in Penang!
We produce a weekly event listing that we distribute in hard copy free of charge to hotels, cafes and tourist venues in Penang, as well as electronically. We collate the events every week, do the graphic design, update the website, arrange the printing and take to our bicycles and motorbikes every Friday morning to drop off paper copies in over 300 locations around George Town, Tanjung Tokong, Tanjung Bungah and Batu Feringghi. We also write articles from time to time about upcoming events we believe should not be missed.
It is a labour of love for us, but one we believe in, and would like to build upon. We would like to expand distribution and coverage geographically to Gelugor, Bayan Lepas, Balik Pulau and the mainland. We would love more volunteers to join our team, to help with distribution every Friday morning, even if only for 30 minutes to cover your own neighbourhood, or to help with raising money with advertising and sponsorship.
