Get to The Art Gallery in Pulau Tikus before the 5th November to view Calvin Chua’s 9th solo exhibition, River Tale.
Winner of the 1986 Malaysian Young Contemporaries Award, Chua has exhibited prolifically since then including Art Expo Malaysia in 2013, as well as being included in the Henry Butcher Auction in 2012 and The Edge auction in 2015.
River Tale documents Chua’s personal, nostalgic interpretation of rural Malaysian life – especially the life that blooms along Malaysia’s rivers – having lived a similar life as a child. In his depictions of children playing in river water, Chua goes beyond documenting river life and makes one think seriously about how – by using bold, neon and futuristic colours – the modern age of technology is rendering such a life atavistic for people nowadays. His hope is that is his paintings will remind children and adults of the inspiration nature and the outdoors lend’s those in Malaysia, and that they do not take it for granted, but as an untold blessing .
