With the ever-increasing number and range of events on offer in Penang, our coverage of some of the regularly organised ones has suffered due to lack of space in the Free Sheet. This is a shame, not least because we have had to reduce our listing space for the excellent selection of free activities that are arranged by Penang Global Tourism during the last weekend of the month.
The activities on offer include free guided walking tours of various heritage enclaves in George Town, of the Protestant Cemetery, and of the Botanical Gardens. The walks in the Botanical Gardens highlight different aspects of the plant life each time.
We love the George Town Night Trails, as the temperature is much more pleasant for exploring the city than it is during the daytime, and many of the buildings are attractively lit up.
Khoo Kong Si holds a monthly evening performance, called An Evening of Lights where the clan house turns on all the lights at its courtyard and stages Chinese arts and cultural performances. Normally the clan house is closed in the evenings, and it is worth a visit just to see it lit up in this spectacular way. Not to mention that entrance is free, and you also will witness dance, music, perhaps mask-changing performances, comedy puppet shows, magic shows and Chinese opera. And of course there is Penang street food for sale.
Not to be outdone, the newly renovated Cheah Kong Si is also now joining the last weekend line-up, with Nostalgic Penang’. It promises to present activities that showcase Penang’s historical way of life, and film screenings in the courtyard about the lifestyle of its former residents.
Other events include the monthly Little Penang Street market, the Teochew Opera performance, the new bus trip to the mainland, and traditional games.
As we no longer have room to list all the events individually in the Free Sheet, we invite you to check out the schedule for the next three months below, and on the organisers’ facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/LFSSPenang
