The Tropical Spice Garden in Teluk Bahang is already a favourite destination for Penangites and tourists alike. The inviting, shady paths are a pleasure to walk along, and the experience can be enhanced by taking advantage of the audio guide, offered in several languages, to learn more about the flora and the spices of the garden. The Tropical Spice Garden is also known for its picturesque restaurant, Tree Monkey, where diners enjoy sitting outside on the deck surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle, while catching glimpses of the sea just below them. The food at Tree Monkey has developed a good reputation locally, and some years ago a cooking school was founded, so that keen cooks could learn the secrets of cooking delicious dishes using local spices.
The cooking school has gone from strength to strength, and this Saturday, we are all offered the opportunity to experience it, free of charge. There will be 30 to 60 minute cooking demonstrations offering lessons in everything from Thai curry to pastries running from 10am until 4pm. The complete agenda is in the image below. Reservations are recommended but not essential. While you are there, take advantage of one of the three free guided tours of the “beverages of the world” section of the gardens. Children will be entertained with stories, games and other activities designed to keep them busy so that parents can concentrate on the demonstrations.
