The next in the regular series of recitals organised by the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra stars Malaysian piano prodigy, Elaine Yap Sin Yee, performing on the PPO’s Steinway piano at the Star Building on Pitt Street. A regular performer and accompanist in both Malaysia and Singapore, she has also performed in Thailand, Japan and the Netherlands and collaborates with orchestras including the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center Orchestra, the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra Singapore and our own Penang Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as with chamber groups. Sin Yee was one of the winners of New England Conservatory’s Marion Rubin Berman 31’ Piano Honors Competition last year, and performed at the New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. She also won First Prize at the Singapore National Piano and Violin Competition (Artist Category, 2013), Second Prize (first prize not awarded) at the 1st Thailand International Mozart Piano Competition in 2011. Sin Yee completed her Bachelor of Music at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore, and is now studying with the New England Conservatory Master of Music program. Sin Yee will perform piano solo pieces ranging in time and style, including Italian Baroque-era composer Domenico Scarlatti’s sonatas in D Major and D Minor, one of the last sonatas Beethoven ever wrote (number 30 in E Major), Schumann’s Fantaisie in C Major, which is perhaps his greatest work for solo piano, and is one of the central works of the early Romantic period, and early 20th Century Russian composer Alexander Scriabin’s one movement Sonata number 5.
The recital takes place this coming Saturday June 23rd at 8pm at the Star Building on Pitt Street. Tickets can be purchased from Bentley Music in Gurney Paragon, or from the PPO (firstname.lastname@example.org), and are priced at RM 50 (RM 30 for students).
