The Choir of Gonville and Caius College Chapel, Cambridge, is one of the UK’s leading collegiate choirs. The twenty-four singers and two organ scholars perform a wide range of sacred and secular choral music spanning the centuries. We are fortunate to have them perform a concert of sacred music for us here in Penang, as part of their Asia tour this year, during the 2017 George Town Festival.
Their concert in Penang brings together many of the most famous and iconic choral masterpieces from Western Europe. From the thrilling top notes of Allegri’s Miserere, to the Italian Renaissance to classics from the German and French Romantic repertoires, including Mendelssohn’s ‘Hear my prayer’ with its soaring soprano solo ‘O for the wings of a dove’.
Appropriately, the Choir will sing in St George’s Church, which was founded in 1818, making it the oldest Anglican church in South East Asia They will also make use of the newly installed pipe organ. The church’s original organ was destroyed during the bombing of George Town in the Second World War, and the Church has been without an organ since then, until earlier this year.
The concert takes place on Tuesday August 22nd, beginning at 8pm. Entrance is by donation and all donations will go to St George’s Church. No reservation is necessary. The full programme for the concert is below.
