This coming weekend sees Penang host its 6th edition of the George Town Literary Festival. With panelists, writers, moderators, poets, filmmakers and performers coming from all over the world, Penang has never had such depth and quality promoting the literary arts.

Inspired by the Welsh word “hiraeth”, the festival’s theme aims to discuss and explore the unique concept of longing for a sense of homeland that has since disappeared. From Zainah Anwar’s keynote address at Black Kettle on the first night to the closing performance by the Festival Writers at China House, the festival is packed with thought-provoking panel discussions and conversations, engaging readings, interactive workshops, and captivating performances.

A.G. Grayling is Master of the New College of the Humanities, London, and its Professor of Philosophy, as well as an author and columnist.
As another medium of art to hit Penang, the Literary Festival is George Town’s salute to raising awareness of the written word on the back of a burgeoning publishing scene. And, bar four events, it’s all free!… which provides and unbelievable opportunity, if you think about it.
