Penang is rich with culture and heritage, but, traditional artisans are finding it hard to sustain their trades and pass on their knowledge. This Artisan Market, the second in what we hope will become a regular event, aims to bridge artisans and the public by giving people the chance to watch, learn from, and buy from the artisans.
Featured traditional artisans include Master Yeap, a wooden deity carver, Mr Ooi, a clay potter, Mr Sim, a rattan weaver, Rozanah, a Batik artist, Mr Ng, a seal engraver and calligrapher and Mr Tjien Chuen, a traditional lantern maker.
Also present will be the vintage-style barbers, Son & Dad, and tsumami-zaiku expert Gillan Teh.
Coffee Rescue, Penang’s own coffee truck, will also be on stand-by for the afternoon to keep everyone fuelled up.
The market runs from 1.30pm until 6pm, with a talk at 2.15pm and demonstrations from 3pm-4pm. It is held at the Star Building on Pitt Street.
