In the couple of years since we last wrote about Open Mic and Jamming nights in Penang a lot has changed, so here is our updated 2019 list of the most happening places to watch and enjoy performers’ first forays into the public eye, or to pick up the mic yourself.
D’Loovi’s Sunday OpenMic and ProJam
This is a weekly event that takes place every Sunday night upstairs at D’Loovis on Love Lane. It has quickly become popular among Penang’s budding singers, musicians, indie artists and even comedians.
8pm until 1am Sundays, D’Loovis, 86 Love Lane. https://www.facebook.com/86lovelane/
One Mic Stand
The latest open mic night opened its stage for the first time in January 2019. To be held approximately twice a month on Fridays it welcomes musicians, poets, comedians, and anyone else with something to say.
8pm-10pm twice a month on Fridays at Tropic Eight Suites, 11A Gottlieb Road. Admission is RM 25 to watch which includes unlimited soft drinks, free of charge for performers. Check out their facebook page for dates. https://www.facebook.com/Tropics8Suites/
Open Jam Session at ChinaHouse
The Canteen at ChinaHouse is perhaps Penang’s best known live music venue. An open jam session is held here on the first Sunday of the month, open to anyone who wishes to sing or play along with the house band. All genres welcome.
9pm onwards, first Sunday of the month, Canteen at ChinaHouse, Beach Street. https://www.facebook.com/TheCanteenAtChinaHouse/
Jammin’ at Living Room
Spreading the jamming scene along Penang Island’s northern shore is Living Room in Batu Ferringhi. Every Friday and Saturday night the quirky caff hosts an inclusive jammin’ session “open to all who can play an instrument or sing along”. To the hilarious shock of some visitors, small riffs and back-and-forths inevitably launch into full-scale songs and ballads whipping all guests into a frenzy.
8pm-10pm, Living Room, 43-c Jalan Batu Feringghi, every Friday and Saturday. https://www.facebook.com/livingroom11100/
