Every last weekend of the month, local history and heritage expert Clement Liang gives an entertaining and informative guided tour of the Protestant Cemetery on Northam Road (Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah). The cemetery houses the graves of some of the most important people in the early history of George Town, including the founder of the European settlement here, Captain Francis Light, James Scott, David Brown of Glugor Estate, and Reverend Hutchings who founded the Penang Free School, which recently celebrated its 200th
anniversary. It also offers a sad reminder of the difficult lives those early European settlers
experienced, with many of them falling victim to malaria and other tropical diseases at an early age.
Usually held in the heat of the early afternoon, next weekend, in conjunction with Halloween, the tour will be held in the evening; participants will benefit from cooler temperatures in which to explore one of the city’s green spaces, and the same historical overview as usual, but also a few surprises especially for Halloween!
The tour starts from the entrance of the Protestant Cemetery at 7.30pm and lasts about an hour.
