Filmmaker, Ryan Anderson, presents a short film on George Town’s dying heritage in the face of rampant and – often mindless – persecution, evictions and destruction disguised as gentrification. Comprised of numerous interviews, Ryan’s expose into the normal life of people living and working in George Town builds a patchwork of stories within his own presented story: from Elyas who opens Penang’s first vintage barbershop to Mrs. Tan who desperately needs back surgery but won’t stop cooking char kuey teow.
Guests are guaranteed to leave the presentation with one thought-provoking question: at what stage do cities like George Town need to account for their blatant cash-in on a ‘heritage boom’? It is a must see for anyone remotely concerned about the death of heritage in the face of development, modernisation and globalisation.
Having already finished the showing in George Town, at Narrow Marrow cafe, Ryan will go on throughout Malaysia to raise awareness of George Town’s precarious future. See his itinerary below and be sure to attend at the respective venues.
